The Live-Tweet After Tomorrow

Attention Live-Tweet, Musical and Fun-Time-Having Fans:

At 8:30PM EST on August 14th, I will lead a special summer movie musical live-tweet funtime weekend thing. I just found out about this blog however and thanks to the very generous Alejandro Adams, I am posting here details of this event (I had originally planned on making it a week from Friday but decided against it once I read Matt's plans to do ETERNAL SUNSHINE on Tuesday.

So. It's a movie musical. It's a live-tweet. But which film?

I have no clue. I do have some ideas and would love to hear suggestions but for the sake of getting this thing together in time to get the word out, I want to have fine, up-standing people like you vote to let me know which titles you're interested in seeing.

Post your votes below or tweet them to me at simonsaybrams.

So far here are the choices and the tally for each title:
THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT (0)
THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS (2)
FORBIDDEN ZONE (0)
FUNNY FACE (0)
THE LITTLE PRINCE (1)
MALAKAAL: THE MONSTER (0)
PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE (4)
TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET (2)
VICTOR/VICTORIA (0)

I've seen some of the aforementioned titles and am dying to catch a couple others but that's what appeals to me about live-tweeting--creating a virtual equivalent to the holiday-themed movie marathons I infrequently hold with friends where people bring their distinct tastes and ideas to the table. Should be fun.

If it helps you to decide: I've seen VICTOR/VICTORIA, TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET and THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT, the last one very recently.

Please spread the word and make sure to vote for your choice. Voting ends this Sunday and please no voting more than once.
Vive le cinema virtuel,
Simon

Great list, and therefore a difficult choice!

FORBIDDEN ZONE is a desert island film for me, but I'm going to have to throw my vote to THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS, only because I worked on the set of the film as a teen, and think it's a fascinating disaster. Plus, it gives me the chance to tell the world about my near-molestation by the late Dom DeLuise.

I've seen very few of those. I have a much more tenuous childhood relationship to Whorehouse than Andrew does (I'm relieved to say). I've also seen Victor/Victoria--a delight. I'm inclined toward something notoriously campy/culty like Phantom of the Paradise, simply because there are no other circumstances under which I'd set out to watch it.

Although I am a nobody (and I wouldn't mind hearing Mr. Filmbrain's harrowing Dom DeLuise anecdote) I'm gonna throw my support behind PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE. Two reasons: (1) It's a ridiculously fun movie that I'd like to rewatch, and (2) the nature of the film is such that dipping in and out of attentiveness (as livetweets would invariably require of an unskilled multitasker like myself) wouldn't really harm or diminish the fun involved. (I hate the whole notion of camp, but if there's such a thing as art-camp, it's this film.)

Extremely difficult choice. Have only seen FUNNY FACE and V/V, and tempted to go with AMERICAN ASTRONAUT or PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE. But if put to a vote, I have to vote unabashedly for TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET, if only to give Chicago's son R. Kelly his due.

Seriously, you deserve a medal if you watch 2 hours straight of that.

A giant N-O NO to Trapped in the Closet, which has been quipped and snarked TO DEATH on the internet and elsewhere. A livetweet would be absolutely redundant, especially given the excellent list of films you've got up there.

I vote Phantom of the Paradise...though at risk of not hearing Andrew's Dom DeLuise story. I mean, do tell...

Andrew Grant said... @ July 14, 2009 at 9:14 PM

I hereby swear to share my Dom DeLuise story, regardless of the film chosen.

I've already voted for The Little Prince, and I stand by it. "And then one day, there'll come a day, a Christmas eve, midsummer's day, a moment when, right there and then, we're going to touch..." #desperatelyinlovewithgenewilderforever
Though that particular night I might not be available.

Whoa, lotsa love for De Palma, huh? I own PHANTOM so this just gives me an excuse to watch it and enjoy with fans. As for art-camp, I think my fav example is LIQUID SKY. Sadly, that's not a musical although the music in it is /unforgettable./ Consider your votes counted.

Oh and as for TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET: I like it. Sincerely. I think the best way to describe my enjoyment is that something happens to my brain while I watch and it makes me fascinated by what R. Kelley's doing. Wonder if a live-tweet would make me coherent on the subject.

But yeah, please tell me if you would like to move the date closer, to a weekday, etc.

Hm; after tallying the votes up thus far, I'm very tempted to casting my vote for an underdog like MALAKAAL (Bollywood Freddie Kruegger!) or THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT (I did just watch it recently). But as of now, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE has a decent lead. Tell your interweb friends to vote, too.

Then again, I've seen VICTOR/VICTORIA countless times and as a Blake Edwards fan, I feel that I'd have the most insight on that one.

Patrick said... @ July 15, 2009 at 7:49 AM

Brian: I was really hoping for a coherent analysis of Trapped in the Closet, and being convinced that it's a hidden gem. Not interested in snarking as the Interweb kids do, cause I've never been one of them (although some may argue with me). There's a camp element to many of these choices, so I figured they were pretty even, and ultimately Simon makes the final call. I couldn't participate since I haven't seen TitC, but I also wouldn't want to be caught dead crossing R. Kelly.

BTW, that little anti-vote of yours is gonna cost you two cents. ;)

Simon Abrams said... @ July 15, 2009 at 9:22 AM

Yes....

Simon makes the final call. I like the sound of that....mwaha?

I don't think TiTC qualifies as a "hidden gem" b/c it's never been hidden. Kelly's ego is the real draw to the project: his mania behind creating something so complex that it's not just a convoluted story that parodies itself, it's something that requires visual aids just to keep everything straight. But yeah, I think so long as I've opened the floor to suggestions, I'll just go with what the people seem to want, which at the moment is PHANTOM.

Simon Abrams said... @ July 15, 2009 at 6:01 PM

I just finished scrolling through Kent's thoughtful and impassioned defense of his JAWS lt. In light of that, I think I may want to do VICTOR/VICTORIA. I know it pretty well, or at least, fairly well and think that the most thoughtful comments I could provide would be on that film. Would it be all right to do that one then? I ask b/c I feel obnoxious for having put the idea to a vote and then saying, "Nah, I like this one."

Anonymous said... @ July 16, 2009 at 10:24 AM

The votes were merely to get the lay of the land, the mood of the people. You are the bossman of this livetweet. V/V would be lovely good fun. And by that I mean The Little Prince. Of course.

Simon Abrams said... @ July 16, 2009 at 12:40 PM

Of course. Thanks for the backup, Marya. I believe I will go ahead and make that my choice then.

So will you be blogging a new post with your confirmed title and date/time so we can link to it on Twitter, etc.? (And did you decide to do it earlier than mid-August?)
